Child Abuse Medical Provider (CHAMP) Education Program

What is the CHAMP program?
When a thorough medical examination in an alleged child sexual abuse case is necessary, it is best, both for the child victim and for the objective documentation of findings, that the medical examination is conducted by a medical professional specially trained in pediatrics and sexual abuse. This ensures both the appropriate sensitivity to the child's needs and essential integrity of the documentation. The CHAMP program was originally developed by Dr. Ann Botash, Medical Director of the Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation (CARE) program at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Who is eligible to trained as CHAMP provider?
Any medical professional - a physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, or physician's assistant - who will be performing sexual abuse evaluations of children and/or adolescents are eligible to participate in the CHAMP program. He/She must also be currently practicing in New York State and hold a valid New York State license.

How does a medical professional become CHAMP trained?
The CHAMP training consists of a pre- and post-test, completion of a manual, and participation in a mentorship. Completing the training does not guarantee certification as a CHAMP-trained medical provider.
