MTA is specifically designed for experienced professionals who are providing medical evaluations of children who are suspected victims of child abuse.

Objectives for this training include:

1) Communicating the history, structure and development of CACs in the US
2) Explaining the expectations of the medical professional in the evaluation of pediatric sexual and physical abuse victims as defined by the NCA medical standard and identifying settings, challenges and benefits of a variety of CAC medical care delivery systems in the US
3) Recognizing cutaneous signs and symptoms of child abuse as well as skeletal injuries associated with pediatric physical abuse
4) Identifying the collection methods and treatment of STIs and defining the meaning of “normal”, “indeterminate”, exams or exams that reveal acute/chronic genital/anal findings vs. conditions that mimic abuse when assessing genital/anal physical findings. In addition being able to interpret relevant research, language and behavior of sexual abuse victims, and communicating to other medical professionals in language that address the findings on an exam
5) Explain the pathophysiology and diagnosis of abusive head trauma
6) Prepare medical testimony for mock trial and identify skills, identify ethical medical testimony and challenges encountered by a medical professional testifying in court on child abuse cases.

This training is for Forensic Interviewers that have completed a 40 hour forensic interviewing course and are actively conducting forensic interviews with minors involving child abuse allegations and maltreatment. This two and a half day course will focus on forensic interviews with young child victims of child abuse and maltreatment.  The course combines lectures and practical exercises to enhance the ability of the forensic interviewer conducting interviews with young children.

orange buttonUnsafe Havens II: Advanced Trial Advocacy Training for Prosecution of Technology-facilitated Child Sexual Exploitation
March 05 - 09, 2012 / Dulles, VA


Join the National District Attorneys Association's National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse at Unsafe Havens II. This four and one-half day advanced trial advocacy course is designed to hone trial skills in topics such as direct examination of a forensic examiner, cross-examination of a defense computer forensic expert, compliant victim testimony, opening statements and closing arguments. The course will utilize lecture and mock trial workshops to develop participant knowledge. This year's course is being held on the campus of AOL in Dulles, VA. AOL has graciously partnered with NDAA's/NCPCA to make this course available.

This course is for experienced prosecutors handling child sexual exploitation cases. Prosecutors with more than two years experience should apply. Participants will be responsible for all costs associated with travelling to and attending the training, but there is no tuition or registration fee.

The National Center for Victims of Crime is partnering with the American Psychological Association (APA) and Childhelp to offer a free 2-day Train-The-Trainer Workshop that will prepare mental health professionals to use and disseminate information about evidence-based, trauma-focused assessment tools and treatments for use with child and adolescent victims of violence. The train-the-trainer workshop is part of a grant awarded to APA by the Department of Justice/Office for Victims of Crime to create the Effective Providers for Child Victims of Violence program (EP Program), a national training initiative that offers child victim service providers practical strategies for selecting effective evidence-based, trauma-focused treatments that are family-centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally sensitive.
