Child Abuse Medical Provider (CHAMP) Education Program

CHAMP now has a new website! Visit www.champprogram.com

What is the CHAMP program?
CHAMP’s goal is to improve the New York State medical response to suspected child abuse by improving the examination, treatment, documentation, community referral, and management of suspected child abuse cases. The CHAMP Network is comprised of child abuse experts (who serve as Mentors and Faculty) and CHAMP-trained medical providers. The providers are physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who have been trained to evaluate cases of suspected child sexual abuse. The CHAMP program was originally developed by Dr. Ann Botash, Medical Director of the Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation (CARE) program at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Who is eligible to trained as CHAMP provider?
A physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant who will be performing sexual abuse evaluations of children and/or adolescents are eligible to participate in the CHAMP program. He/She must also be currently practicing in New York State and hold a valid New York State license.

How does a medical professional become CHAMP trained?
The CHAMP training consists of a pre- and post-test, completion of a manual, and participation in a mentorship. Completing the training does not guarantee certification as a CHAMP-trained medical provider.

Who are CHAMP trained providers in New York State?
